How to make smooth Tom Brown pap
A simple method for a creamy, lump-free bowl of Tom Brown, plus easy ways to make it your own.

Tom Brown is one of the easiest warm breakfasts to make at home. With a bowl, a spoon and some hot water, you can have a smooth, filling meal ready in a few minutes. Here is a simple method, plus a few ways to change it up.
What you need
- 3 to 4 heaped tablespoons of Vashdela Tom Brown
- A little cool water
- About one and a half cups of hot water
- Milk and Dates Powder, if you like
Method
- Put the Tom Brown in a bowl or small pot.
- Add a little cool water and stir into a smooth paste with no dry lumps. This step is the secret to a silky finish.
- Pour in the hot water slowly, stirring all the time, until the pap is as thick as you like.
- For a thicker, richer pap, set the pot over low heat for 2 to 3 minutes and keep stirring.
- Take it off the heat and add milk or a spoonful of Dates Powder to taste.
Tips for the best bowl
- Always make the paste first. Adding the powder straight into hot water causes lumps.
- Control the thickness with more or less hot water.
- Pap thickens as it cools. Loosen leftovers with a little warm milk or water.
Ways to enjoy it
Top it with sliced banana or a handful of roasted groundnuts, or serve it alongside akara or bread for a fuller meal. If you have a food allergy, remember that Tom Brown contains wheat, soya and groundnut.
